ANSA MOTORSPORTS ANTICIPATING, EXCITING SEASON FINALE
The 2015 Pirelli World Challenge season started in March at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, and after 17 rounds and thousands of miles raced throughout some of the best racetracks in the United States and Canada, it is time to race the final act of this captivating 2015 season.
For his first professional season, the driver from Napa Valley, Calif., Lorenzo Trefethen, did not really know what to expect, until his first race at COTA. He did not know the series, the team or the competitors. He had raced Porsche GT3 Cup before, but never at that level. The first half of the season was good for Trefethen and the ANSA team. Trefethen suffered a setback in practice at St. Petersburg, Fla., but ANSA Motorsports showed what it was made of, rebuilding Trefethen’s car in less than two days, giving him a race car even faster than before the accident, and enabling the Napa racer to score his first two podium finishes of the season.
The Canadian race weekend was the ultimate event of the season for Trefethen and ANSA. In race 1, he scored his third podium finish of the season and, in race 2, he crossed the finish line first at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, scoring his first professional career win and the first Pirelli World Challenge win for ANSA Motorsports, which also made its debut in the series.
Trefethen comes to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with a 62-point advantage over fourth-place competitor Alec Udell. Nothing is set in stone yet for the third-place finish on the 2015 Pirelli World Challenge GT-Cup class championship podium. Trefethen knows that if he wants to maintain his third place, he will have to regain his Canadian winning form and compete at the highest level with Udell, in the single race scheduled in Monterey on Sunday afternoon.
ANSA Motorsports and driver Trefethen scored two good results at the last event in Sonoma Raceway two weeks ago. They come to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with the ambition to finish on the podium of this season-finale championship race.
"Laguna Seca will be bittersweet, I think,” Trefethen said. “I love that track - it has a turn, called the corkscrew, for crying out loud - right up my alley. It will be a strong finish to the season, but that will be the end, this year. It just seems too soon!"
The 2015 season-finale weekend is set for a return appearance at the 11-turn, 2.238-mile jewel of a road course on California's beautiful central coast -- Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, in Salinas, Calif., -- Sept. 11-13. The weekend season finale is a series headliner event, where Trefethen will drive the No. 13 Trefethen Family Vineyards/750 Group/BRM Chronographes/PitStop Furniture/Durango Operating/B+ Foundation Porsche GT3 Cup.
“We had a very decent season, and I am pleased with Lorenzo’s overall performance,” said ANSA Motorsports Team Owner Alain Nadal. “Laguna Seca is going to be a challenging race. We know Lorenzo must show his best form and finish on the podium, if we all want to keep our third place in the championship. I know we can do it. We’ll give him a good car so he can compete with the best GT-Cup drivers on Sunday.”
The Laguna Seca race week will start on Thursday morning, Sept. 10, with a promoter test session at 11:10 a.m. The first official Pirelli World Challenge practice is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. A second official practice session is set for Friday, Sept. 11, at noon before qualifying set for 11:25 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12. Following a warm-up session on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 8 a.m., the season-finale race (round 18) will start at 1:35 p.m. (all PDT time).
The Pirelli World Challenge GT/GTA/GT-Cup event presented by Cadillac at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca event will air on CBS Sports Network Sunday, Sept. 20, at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
